Annual General Meeting 2023

We are pleased to announce details of Leeds Bereavement Forum’s Annual General Meeting this year during National Grief Awareness Week.

Date: Wednesday 6 December 2023
Venue: The Thoresby Room, Leeds City Museum
Time: 10am – midday (registration from 9.30am)

We are really pleased to welcome Ted Bowman back to Leeds for his fourth visit, after his most recent appearance at our last ‘in real life’ pre-pandemic AGM in 2019.

At our AGM this year he will be speaking about “Narrative Power: Finding Words for Living, Dying, Death and Bereavement.” Ted Bowman is a grief and family educator based in Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA. For over 40 years he has been teaching, leading workshops, writing and providing consultation about disruptive changes and their resulting loss and grief. He was an adjunct instructor in the School of Social Work for the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul, teaching courses on grief counselling and therapy. For the past 20 years, he has travelled annually to England, Scotland and Ireland for work with hospice, mental health, and grief and bereavement care settings.

Narrative Power:  Finding Words for Living, Dying, Death and Bereavement.

If something is unmentionable, it can also be unmanageable (folk wisdom). Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced (Baldwin)

When losses occur, words are sought…sometimes found…sometimes offered. Drawing on bibliotherapeutic and narrative therapy principles, perspectives and tools for narrative power will be presented, demonstrated and discussed. Narrative is not about having people tell their stories. Narrative is interested in power – who has the power to speak stories into existence -and THAT voices of losses and bereavement are heard and validated.
